Black Iridescent Hand Fan Soft Captain's Hat

It took me about 6 months to get these hats right!  I did use a pre-designed pattern, but I had to adapt the shape to make it my own style.  I had to get the right structure and stiffnesses of fabric and interfacing (each part of the hat is a different stiffness to give it the final shape), as well as the right structure for inside of the brim.  I found that black velvet worked best for the brim, and that sometimes putting some piping around the top enhanced the shape.

I often use the scraps from my clothing line for these, to reduce waste.  Sometimes I have fabric printed with my choice of prints, to add uniqueness to the design.  The top is sometimes a great canvas for a fun picture!

The hats are all lined with quality and curated lightweight linings, for comfort and a finished look.  And the filigrees, chain, and buttons added to the front are often one-offs found in thrift and vintage shops.

I plan to do more with upcycled materials, just getting the hang of this!
